I Have a Voice
The King’s Speech is a moving, hilarious, and vulnerable story about the power of friendship to help heal the wounds of trauma. There’s one scene that’s particularly beautiful, just before a prince with a speech impediment takes the throne. His speech therapist challenges him, asking him why he thinks people should take him seriously, until the king-to-be finally declares, “I have a voice!”
It’s the cry from the heart of any person who’s experienced abuse. Why should someone listen to me?
Because you have a voice.
Which cuts to the deeper meaning: because you are human.
A person’s value as a human is not diminished because they’ve experienced the worst kind of pain and violation.
Their voice needs to be heard.
In this place we hear you.
